EU Commits €86 Million to Long-Term Climate and Environmental Action

The European Commission has announced over €86 million in new investments through the LIFE Programme, backing five ambitious climate and environmental projects in Denmark, Estonia, Poland, Slovenia, and Iceland. This strategic funding highlights the EU’s commitment to becoming the world’s first climate-neutral continent by 2050.

Three of the five projects directly support the EU’s new *Water Resilience Strategy*, which aims to restore water cycles, boost cross-border water infrastructure, and ensure access to clean, affordable freshwater. The projects also align with broader EU strategies, including the Biodiversity Strategy for 2030, the Nature Restoration Law, and the clean energy transition.

Highlights of the new LIFE projects include:

  • Denmark: LIFE ACT will unite 27 municipalities to cut CO₂ emissions and climate-proof nearly 3,000 km of coastline;
  • Poland: LIFE Pom GOZilla.PL will advance circular economy solutions to reduce landfill and waste;
  • Estonia: LIFE SIP WET-EST will restore wetlands, reduce pollution, and improve water quality;
  • Slovenia: LIFE4ADAPT focuses on tackling extreme weather—droughts, floods, and wildfires;
  • Iceland: LIFE ICEWATER will strengthen water governance and safeguard scarce freshwater resources.

Part of the broader €5.4 billion LIFE budget for 2021–2027, these long-term, multi-country initiatives are designed to create systemic change and deliver measurable environmental impact across Europe.
